FedEx's use of independent contractors has come under fire again, this time by shareholders.
The company already is fighting a multidistrict litigation class action lawsuit from its ground unit drivers. It also has been assessed $319 million in penalties by the IRS for not paying payroll taxes on those drivers whom the government said were misclassified. And it lost a case on its classification of drivers in California, which has forced it to change its route system.
The latest lawsuit was filed yesterday in Memphis, Tenn., on behalf of the Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 51 Pension Fund, which holds shares of FedEx as part of the fund.

We employees are in a lot more trouble than we are willing to admit.
The top of scale increase came out. The letter with the paychecks makes it clear that they are going to "support the increases almost exclusively through productivity increases...." (I hope everyone understands what this is code for.) They go on to say "growing our shipment volumes." (Isn't that normal, anyway?) I'm sure the usual suspects will be the people who are affected: the dockworkers.
So if you folks plan to organize, you had better do it quickly and learn the meaning of brotherhood. 'cause if you ain't got the dockworkers, y'all are going to have a hard time organizing. Start talking to them...NOW. I'm sure you all feel as alone in this as they do.
